Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has expressed his opinion on the injury that led to his teammate Taiwo Awoniyi being put in an induced coma.
Aina suggests that the situation could have been avoided if the line assistant had signaled the offside in time.
The incident occurred in the final minutes of the 2-2 draw against Leicester City, when Awoniyi collided with the post.
Despite feeling significant pain, the forward continued playing.
Subsequently, Awoniyi underwent “urgent” abdominal surgery and was placed in a coma to facilitate his recovery.
Awoniyi crashed against the post trying to finish a cross from Anthony Elanga. The winger was in an offside position in the previous play, but the linesman only raised the flag once the action was over.
Anthony was offside by a lot. Everyone could see it, I could see it too from where I was.
Ola Aina
Aina also commented on the way offside was handled in the past, suggesting that raising the flag immediately would simplify decisions.
After the match, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis entered the field and argued with coach Nuno Espirito Santo.
The club issued a statement explaining that the owner’s emotional reaction was due to Awoniyi’s pain and his frustration with the medical staff.
