Changes in Women’s Boxing: Analysis of the New Rankings

Recent activity in women’s boxing and the retirements of key figures have caused significant movements in the weekly divisional rankings. The departure of undisputed champions and the performance of female boxers in the ring have reconfigured the landscape. Recent retirements by undisputed atomweight champion Tina Rupprecht and WBC and WBO super welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus have opened up new opportunities in their respective divisions. This has created a domino effect in the rankings, with several female boxers climbing positions.

Light Flyweight

In the light flyweight category, the majority decision victory of WBC champion Lourdes Juarez over Jessica Nery Plata in the main event of “Most Valuable Prospects 16” on Saturday, resulted in a change of positions in the ranking. Juarez now holds the second position, while Nery Plata is in third place. Juarez benefited from her greater punch volume to secure the victory against Nery Plata, who was returning after almost two years of inactivity.

In the same boxing card, former bantamweight champion Shurretta Metcalf recovered from her knockout loss to Cherneka Johnson in July, achieving a unanimous decision over Kyrstal Rosado-Ortiz and securing her place at number 4 in the 118-pound division. Also on the card, unified middleweight champion Desley Robinson demonstrated her dominance by defeating Logan Holler in the second round. Robinson maintains her number 1 position in the 160-pound division. In Germany, Sarah Bormann obtained a controversial split decision over Yuko Kuroki, unifying the IBF and WBA strawweight titles. Bormann remains at number 2, but Kuroki rose to number 4 thanks to her performance in the fight.

Rankings are updated every Tuesday, based on recent fights, head-to-head matchups, and the quality of opponents. Subjectivity is inevitable until the boxers face each other. Boxers who have not fought in 18 months and do not have a scheduled fight will be removed from the rankings until they compete again.
