The British & Irish Lions fullback, Blair Kinghorn, suffered a knee injury that marred the victory over the ACT Brumbies in Canberra on Wednesday. However, coach Andy Farrell has stated that the injury does not appear to be serious. The Lions secured a 36-24 victory over a weakened Brumbies team, who were missing some of their best players due to their absence from the Australian training camp. Kinghorn had to leave the field at the beginning of the first half and spent the rest of the match applying ice to his left knee. In response to the post-match question about whether he feared the worst for Kinghorn, Farrell replied: “No”. The coach added that the fullback was singing in the bed where the medical staff was evaluating him. He knocked his knee. He held on quite a bit, but there was no need to continue… he’s in good spirits.

Marcus Smith, who came on for Kinghorn, had a good performance and scored one of the Lions’ five tries.

He had some very good touches. He is dangerous with the ball in hand. They are good learnings for him.

Farrell fielded a team very similar to the one expected for the first match against the Wallabies, with second row Maro Itoje as captain and fly-half Finn Russell directing the game. The Lions got off to a bad start, conceding a try in the opening minutes, but they prevailed to secure their fourth consecutive win on their tour of Australia, following victories over Western Force, Queensland Reds and New South Wales Waratahs.

Our game control was quite good tonight, which allowed us to keep the pressure in the right end of the field. So that’s a good step forward.

We’re in a good moment… we’re doing well in certain aspects of the game, at times, etc., but we need to improve in all areas.

“It’s a good feeling,” said Itoje, sitting next to Farrell at the post-match press conference.

We know we are not the finished product, we know we have to improve, we know we have to progress. But I think that’s a very good position for us.
