San Jose Secures Sharks’ Stay with Million-Dollar Deal

The San Jose City Council unanimously approved a crucial agreement that guarantees the renovation of the Sharks’ stadium and the team’s continued presence in the city until the year 2051. This agreement represents a significant milestone for the franchise and its fans. Mayor Matt Mahan and the ten council members voted in favor of this agreement, which involves a municipal investment of $325 million to modernize the SAP Center, a 32-year-old venue owned by the city. Team owner Hasso Plattner will contribute an additional $100 million, adding to the more than $100 million already invested in improvements over the last decade.

The agreement also includes penalties for the Sharks should they decide to leave the city before the contract expires on June 30, 2051. In addition, the planning of a new stadium is contemplated, with a start date scheduled for September 2027. The Sharks, who began their journey in 1991 and settled in downtown San Jose in 1993, celebrate this agreement that ensures their long-term presence.

The Sharks are proud to have played in San Jose for over 30 years and look forward to enjoying 25 more years. This collaboration with the city will bring much-needed improvements for fans, teams, and artists.
