J.T. Miller Named Captain of the New York Rangers

The New York Rangers have designated J.T. Miller as their captain, a key decision just three weeks before the start of the NHL season. The announcement was made on the eve of the start of training camp, marking Miller’s return to the team that drafted him. The Rangers were without a captain for much of last season, following Jacob Trouba’s transfer to Anaheim in December. Miller, who was reacquired by the Rangers at the end of January in a deal with Vancouver, became one of the team’s top scorers and positioned himself among the best in the NHL since his arrival.

Since his arrival last season, J.T. immediately became a leader for our group and exemplifies how we want to behave both on and off the ice. Congratulations to J.T. and his entire family on this incredibly significant achievement, and we are confident that he will continue to represent our organization with class, commitment, and integrity.

Chris Drury, General Manager
Miller, 32, becomes the 29th captain in the history of this franchise. He assumes leadership at a crucial moment, with coach Mike Sullivan at the helm of the team. Expectations are high after the team failed to qualify for the playoffs last season, after reaching the Eastern Conference final in 2024. Following the departure of Peter Laviolette and the contract extension of Chris Drury, several changes were made to the roster, including the addition of Vladislav Gavrikov. The first on-ice training of the training camp is scheduled for Thursday. The Rangers will start the season on October 7 against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Sullivan’s former team.
