Maple Leafs Bolster Offense with Matias Maccelli Acquisition

The Toronto Maple Leafs have secured winger Matias Maccelli in a strategic move, seeking to revitalize their offense. The 24-year-old player arrives with the hope of a fresh start in his career. In the agreement, the Maple Leafs ceded a conditional third-round pick in 2027 to the Utah Mammoth. The condition states that if the Leafs reach the playoffs and Maccelli accumulates at least 51 points in the 2025-26 season, the pick will become a second-round pick in 2029. Maccelli, with a cap hit of $3.425 million, will become a restricted free agent after next season. The Finnish player had an outstanding season in 2023-24 with the Arizona Coyotes, recording 17 goals and 40 assists in 82 games. However, after the team’s relocation to Utah, Maccelli failed to maintain the same performance, accumulating 8 goals and 10 assists in 55 games and seeing his ice time reduced.

We appreciate everything Matias has done for the organization. He is a great person and a consummate professional, we wish him all the best.

Bill Armstrong, General Manager of the Mammoth
This move adds to a series of important decisions for the Leafs, who recently renewed the contracts of John Tavares and Matthew Knies. Maccelli’s arrival could strengthen the team’s scoring ability beyond the first two lines. On the other hand, Utah frees up space in its salary cap for next season. It is speculated that the Mammoth could be interested in signing prominent free agents, such as winger Brad Marchand of the Florida Panthers.
