The Hughes Brothers Secure Their Future with Multi-Million Dollar Contracts

In a move that excites hockey fans, two of the Hughes brothers have secured their long-term future with the New Jersey Devils. Defenseman Luke Hughes signed a seven-year, $63 million contract extension, joining his star brother Jack at training camp. The news has generated speculation about whether Quinn Hughes, star defenseman for the Vancouver Canucks, could join his brothers in the near future. Canucks team president Jim Rutherford mentioned last April that Quinn “wants to play with his brothers,” which has fueled rumors of a possible family reunion on the ice. Both Luke and Jack are now under contract with the Devils until 2030, while Quinn will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season.

I think the three of us would love to play together someday. Who knows if it will happen or not. We’ll see. But I know he loves Vancouver and he’s the captain there. We love being here. You never know. Never say never.

Luke’s contract, signed this week, has an annual impact of $9 million on the salary cap. The 22-year-old defenseman is entering his fourth season in the NHL and has 93 points in 155 games, in addition to two assists in four playoff games. Luke missed a portion of training camp due to contract negotiations with the Devils. Quinn also missed part of the 2021-22 preseason during contract negotiations with the Canucks before signing a six-year, $47.1 million contract with Vancouver. Luke revealed that Quinn offered him his perspective during the conversations with the Devils.

Just stay patient and get what you want. As a family, we decided on the deal and we are very happy with the result and very excited to be here for the next seven years.

Jack admitted that he didn’t have much advice to give his brother, as he had never been through a similar situation. He stressed the importance of Luke reaching an agreement he felt comfortable with. In addition to missing part of training camp, Luke’s preparation for this season was interrupted by his recovery from shoulder surgery in May. Devils coach Sheldon Keefe has indicated that the team is taking this into consideration when reintegrating him into the lineup. Luke mentioned that he has been “skating on his own” at home, skating five times a week to get in shape. On his first day back on the field, he participated in two consecutive practice sessions to start making up for lost time.

That’s the ramp-up. It’s a bit of a unique situation where not only has he missed camp, but he’s also recovering from significant shoulder surgery since he last played. So we want to make sure we give him the appropriate time. But he looks good. He’s gone through all the medicals and testing that guys would typically go through at the start of camp, and he’s cleared.

Sheldon Keefe
Keefe expressed that he sees no reason why Luke wouldn’t be ready for the Devils’ regular season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes on October 9th.
