Anthony Richardson’s Future in Doubt After Colts’ Decision

INDIANAPOLIS – The future of Anthony Richardson Sr., quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, is up in the air following Tuesday’s decision to name Daniel Jones as the team’s starting quarterback. Richardson’s agent, Deiric Jackson, reacted with disappointment to this move and expressed uncertainty about his client’s future with the club. Although Jackson didn’t demand a trade, he questioned whether coach Shane Steichen’s decision might have been predetermined, especially after the Colts signed Jones in March to a one-year, $14 million contract.

We have a lot to discuss.

Jackson believes that Tuesday’s decision, along with some previous situations involving Richardson, have affected the team’s credibility. Richardson was benched for two games last season, and Steichen argued at the time that he needed to improve his game preparation. The team quickly reinstated the player selected in the fourth position of the 2023 draft to the starting lineup after suffering two consecutive defeats with veteran Joe Flacco under center.

Confidence is an important factor and that is, at best, questionable at this moment.

Jackson added that Richardson showed improvements in the areas he needed and had a great training camp. Earlier on Tuesday, Richardson stated that there were no “resentments” following Steichen’s decision.

He made a decision. That is the decision we have to live with, but without grudges, nothing personal. I just have to keep growing. I can’t let not being a starter prevent me from becoming the person, the player I’m supposed to be.

In recent months, the Colts organization’s stance has been that Richardson still has a future in Indianapolis, regardless of the outcome of the quarterback competition. Coaches claimed to have seen a notable improvement in Richardson’s technique and accuracy during the camp, considering it a response to the competitive situation created by Jones’s signing. Jackson reiterated his belief that Richardson’s playmaking ability makes him a viable quarterback in the league, something that, according to him, was demonstrated when Richardson led two winning drives in the final minutes of the season.

When they needed a big play last year, whose hands did they put the ball in? Anthony’s.
