Titans Simplify Offense for Cam Ward: New Direction in Tennessee

3 Min Read

The Tennessee Titans have made significant changes to their technical structure, which will translate into tactical modifications on the field.

Offensive Adjustments for Cam Ward

With the arrival of interim coach Mike McCoy, the offense is expected to be simplified for rookie quarterback Cam Ward, according to sources close to the team.

The goal is for Ward to focus on executing a few key plays well, instead of trying to master the large number of elements that have cost him in his first six games.

This strategy is reminiscent of the one the Bills applied with Josh Allen in his rookie season. In addition to offensive simplification, the Titans will need to adapt to a new ground attack. Following the dismissal of coach Brian Callahan, his father Bill Callahan, known for his experience on the offensive line, also left the team. Scott Fuchs and Matt Jones will take responsibility for the offensive line. The Titans are looking for a change of direction, and simplifying the offense is a first step in that direction. The team has already begun the search for a new head coach. The team is expected to favor a coach with experience and leadership qualities. Matt Nagy, offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Arthur Smith, offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, are some of the names being considered. The search is described as “broad”, so there could be many more options.
Cam Ward, ranked 30th in the NFL in passer rating (67.3), with 1,101 yards and tied for 33rd with three touchdown passes. The Titans plan to simplify the offense for the rookie quarterback. The president of football operations, Chad Brinker, will lead the search, bringing his experience from the Packers’ head coach search in 2019. The main goal is to facilitate Ward’s game, who has been the first rookie in the franchise’s history to be a starter in the first six games. Ward completed 26 passes with a 68.4% completion rate in the loss against the Las Vegas Raiders. Currently, the Titans are last in the NFL in total offense and in yards per carry and pass per game. The team also has a low conversion percentage in third opportunities and in first opportunities per game. Ward acknowledges that he hasn’t shown his best level yet.
