Lonnie Johnson Jr. Suffers Fracture and Requires Evaluation

Las Vegas Raiders safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. suffered a fractured fibula during Saturday’s practice at Allegiant Stadium, according to sources. Johnson will undergo an MRI to determine if there is any additional damage. The six-year veteran was carted off the field after colliding with defensive end Maxx Crosby while attempting to tackle running back Raheem Mostert. Johnson, who was projected as a backup, has been competing for a role in the Raiders’ secondary rotation. During training camp, he has received repetitions with the first team whenever the defense has had three safeties on the field. Johnson and Isaiah Pola-Mao lined up in the traditional safety positions, while Jeremy Chinn played nickel.

The 29-year-old player signed a one-year contract with the Raiders this offseason. He and Chinn were part of the additions at the safety position following the departures of Tre’von Moehrig and Marcus Epps. Las Vegas also signed veteran safety Jamal Adams, who has become a weak-side linebacker. Johnson, selected in the second round by the Houston Texans in 2019, has played for five teams during his professional career. In 83 games, he has accumulated 199 tackles, 15 passes defended, and four interceptions.
