Jordan Mailata and the “Tush Push” Criticism

The Philadelphia Eagles’ left tackle, Jordan Mailata, has responded to criticism about his team’s victory against the Kansas City Chiefs. Mailata believes that minimizing the impact of the defense and special teams is “incredibly disrespectful”.

I understand the anger [over the “tush push”]. What I don’t understand is them using it as an excuse for why we won the game. I think it’s incredibly disrespectful to our defense and our special teams, who played very well. And my brothers on defense and special teams who played very well that game, who had our backs when we weren’t moving the ball or doing anything.

In an interview, Mailata expressed his frustration with the narrative that attributes the victory to the “tush push”, a type of short-yardage play. The player highlighted the importance of the defense and special teams in the triumph. Mailata added that the play is part of American football and should not be the only reason the game was won.

That pisses me off because we give a lot to this game and, to base it on a short yardage play, which is an American football play, and say we won the game because of that, but not because of how our defense played and not because of how our special teams played, putting us in those positions. You know, I think it’s bullshit.

The Eagles’ defense played a crucial role in the game. A key moment was when Travis Kelce failed to catch a pass from Patrick Mahomes near the goal line, resulting in an interception that Drew Mukuba returned 41 yards. Jalen Hurts scored a touchdown with the “tush push” on the next possession. The Eagles used the “tush push” six times in the game, achieving four first downs and a touchdown. The play was almost banned in the offseason, but the proposal did not get the necessary votes.
