Geno Smith Apologizes for Obscene Gesture to Fans
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith offered apologies after making an inappropriate gesture towards the fans after the 24-10 loss against the Cleveland Browns at Allegiant Stadium. Videos of the incident quickly spread on social media after the encounter.Smith added: “I just want it to be known that those things won’t happen again on my part.” The quarterback suffered 10 sacks in the Raiders’ fifth consecutive loss, leaving them with a 2-9 record for the season. Previously, fans booed the veteran quarterback during pre-game introductions. The team issued a statement regarding this: “We are disappointed by his actions and have discussed the incident with Geno. We hold the Raider Nation in high regard and take this matter seriously.” In August, Smith and Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby were caught on video making a similar gesture towards Seattle Seahawks fans before their preseason game. A fan appeared to provoke the players by displaying a sign that read: “Biggest bust: Geno or JaMarcus Russell?” Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch was fined $10,128 for making a gesture similar to Green Bay Packers fans in November 2024. Smith has struggled in his first season in Las Vegas. He has thrown for 2,367 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, tied for the league lead. He has also been sacked 41 times, the second most in the NFL.“I would like to apologize to the fans and the Raider Nation,” Smith stated on Wednesday. “I made an error in judgment out of frustration. And that’s not an excuse. I must be better and hold myself to a higher standard. In that moment, I didn’t. I am sincerely sorry and very sorry for having done that.”
