Defensive Concerns for the Indianapolis Colts

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Colts’ defense faces serious injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Starting cornerback Charvarius Ward, due to a concussion, will not play against the Broncos, according to coach Shane Steichen. Adding to this is the absence of backup cornerback Jaylon Jones, who suffered a hamstring injury and is expected to be out for several weeks.

Adding to the defensive concerns is the status of pass rusher Laiatu Latu. Latu suffered a hamstring injury during Wednesday’s practice and missed Thursday and Friday’s practices. It’s unclear if he will play, but Steichen indicated that the 2024 first-round pick has shown progress in the last 24 hours and could still be available. Steichen mentioned the possibility of a reduced role for Latu.

In Week 1, the Colts had an outstanding defensive performance against the Miami Dolphins, limiting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to a QBR of 2.7, the worst of his career, and to only 114 passing yards.

The situation at cornerback will likely force second-year player Mekhi Blackmon to take on a larger role behind veterans Kenny Moore II (slot) and Xavien Howard. Blackmon was traded to the Colts from the Minnesota Vikings last month and played 22 snaps in the first game of the season.
