Browns Would Consider Keeping Four Quarterbacks on the Roster
Berea, Ohio – Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry revealed on Thursday that there is a possibility the team could keep all four healthy quarterbacks competing for the starting position on the 53-man roster. The Browns are holding a quarterback competition that includes four contenders: veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Pickett took all the first-team offense reps during 11-on-11 drills during the first training camp practice on Wednesday, while Gabriel, a third-round pick, led the second-team offense. Sanders, a fifth-round pick, led the third-team offense, while Flacco, an 18-year veteran, did not receive any 11-on-11 reps. Coach Kevin Stefanski said the quarterback rotation will be fluid during the first week of practice before reevaluating the order for Week 2. Quarterback Deshaun Watson is on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from a right Achilles tendon injury, which the team expects to keep him out for most of the 2025 NFL season. When asked about Watson’s situation, Berry said the team is dealing with his recovery “day by day”.We have largely viewed the last five roster spots as more developmental spots and that could come from any position. I also think that with the flexibility of the roster today, especially with the elevations that can be had from the practice squad, there’s more flexibility in terms of how to build the 48-player roster for game day, where it may not be as restrictive as in the past. … If there are four that are worthy of being on the 53-man roster and we think that’s the most sensible thing for us to keep, then we will.
