New Owners in the Celtics: The Bill Chisholm Era Begins

The Boston Celtics, the NBA’s most decorated franchise, have a new owner. Bill Chisholm, a private equity magnate, has taken control of the team, succeeding Wyc Grousbeck. Chisholm emphasized that the main goal remains winning championships, maintaining the organization’s ambition.

Coming in second place is not the goal, and it is not acceptable. The ultimate measuring stick is winning championships.

The group led by Chisholm made a record offer of $6.1 billion for the Celtics, which was unanimously approved by the NBA. Chisholm expressed his commitment to continue the legacy of the Celtics and to add more titles. Chisholm, a native of Massachusetts, recalled his earliest memories of the Celtics, including the teams of Dave Cowens, JoJo White, and John Havlicek, as well as those of Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale, who won three championships in the 1980s. The acquisition was finalized after the Celtics won the NBA championship. Chisholm leads a group that owns the majority of the team’s shares, with full control expected by 2028, valuing the franchise at $7.3 billion. Other investors include Aditya Mittal, Bruce Beal, Andrew Bialecki, Dom Ferrante, Rob Hale, Mario Ho, and Ian Loring. Sixth Street is also a “significant participant” in the investment group, according to a team statement. Grousbeck and Steve Pagliuca acquired the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million. During their management, the team won two NBA titles, reached the finals twice, and qualified for the playoffs in 20 of 23 seasons. The most recent title was in 2024, led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Rich Gotham (team president), Brad Stevens (general manager), and Joe Mazzulla (coach) are expected to remain in their positions. Chisholm will represent the team in league matters as governor, while Grousbeck will continue as co-owner, CEO, and alternate governor to lead daily operations alongside Chisholm.

We have a very solid core in the roster. We have, I believe, the best basketball people there are. And we have a very talented business operations team. Why would you make big changes to that?

Grousbeck highlighted the importance of the responsibility of owning a franchise with such a rich history, with legends like Red Auerbach, Bob Cousy, Bill Russell, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett. Chisholm takes over the team at a time of transition, two seasons after their last championship.
