New Winds in the Celtics: Bill Chisholm Takes Command

The Boston Celtics, the most decorated franchise in the NBA, have a new owner. Bill Chisholm, a private equity magnate, took control of the team from Wyc Grousbeck, marking the beginning of a new era.

“Coming in second is not the goal, and it’s not acceptable. The ultimate goal is to win championships. Wyc has two, and we’re going to get more, and he and I together are going to help achieve that,” Chisholm stated.

The agreement, unanimously approved by the NBA, was closed for a record figure of 6.1 billion dollars, the highest paid for a professional sports franchise in the United States. Chisholm leads an investor group that now controls the majority of the shares, with the total acquisition planned for 2028, which could raise the total value to 7.3 billion dollars. Chisholm, a Massachusetts native, expressed his enthusiasm for the Celtics’ heritage, recalling the iconic rosters of Dave Cowens, JoJo White, John Havlicek in the 70s and those of Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale in the 80s. Chisholm’s arrival comes after the Celtics’ recent victory in the NBA Finals, led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. The new owner was optimistic about the team’s future, highlighting the strength of the squad, the talent of the coaching staff, and the experience of Wyc Grousbeck. Rich Gotham (team president), Brad Stevens (general manager), and Joe Mazzulla (coach) will continue in their roles, ensuring continuity in sports management. Grousbeck will remain as co-owner, CEO, and alternate governor, collaborating with Chisholm in daily operations. Grousbeck, who acquired the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million, recalled the achievements of his management, including two NBA titles, two appearances in the finals, and 20 playoff appearances in 23 seasons. The transition comes at a key moment for the Celtics, with Jayson Tatum recovering from an injury and the need to readjust the financial strategy after the departure of key players.
