Stanton Takes Firm Steps in His Recovery

Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton continues to progress in his recovery process after suffering from epicondylitis in both elbows. This Wednesday, he participated in a batting practice session at Yankee Stadium, as part of his return to the active roster.

Stanton, 35, has yet to debut this season due to the discomfort he has been experiencing since last year. Despite the pain, he played and was recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the American League Championship Series.

To speed up his recovery, Stanton received three injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Although he acknowledges that he will probably have to deal with chronic discomfort in his elbows, he assures that he feels fit to compete.

If I’m out there, it’s because I’m well enough to play. There’s nothing more to say.

Manager Aaron Boone doesn’t rule out Stanton being available at the end of May, when his stint on the 60-day injured list concludes. The Yankees will begin a West Coast road trip against the Angels and Dodgers on that date.

Boone pointed out that Stanton’s rehabilitation has been particular, as it does not require defensive preparation and he has been facing pitches from the high-speed “Trajekt” machine in recent weeks.

In addition, the Yankees could soon count on the return of Nicaraguan pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga, who was transferred to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as part of his rehabilitation after elbow surgery. The plan contemplates five appearances before an eventual return to the big league bullpen at the end of this month.

I’m very excited about what I’ve seen from ‘Lo’. He’s close to returning and will be very good for us.

The return of Stanton and Loáisiga would be a significant reinforcement for the Yankees.
