Naomi Osaka: An Impactful Debut at the Australian Open
Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka caused a stir by appearing on the Rod Laver Arena’s center court in an outfit that, according to experts, will be remembered as “iconic”. Osaka paraded through the tunnel connecting the interior with the court, wearing an outfit that caught everyone’s attention. The design, a collaboration between Osaka herself, Nike, and Japanese designer Robert Wun, combined a pleated skort with a turquoise dress. The outfit was complemented by a wide-brimmed hat with a veil and a parasol, merging the “delicacy of the butterfly” with the “power of the jellyfish”.The tennis player, known for her striking outfits, explained that the design was inspired by her victory at the 2021 Australian Open.In the sporting arena, Osaka managed to advance to the second round after defeating Croatian Antonia Ruzic in a match that went to three sets.Osaka, winner of four Grand Slam titles, including two Australian Opens (2019 and 2021) and two US Opens (2018 and 2020), will face Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the next round. This outfit is now iconic. It’s inspired by a jellyfish and I’m glad I can do what I like. There’s a butterfly on the hat and also on the umbrella. It has to do with the Australian Open that I won in 2021.
