New York Mets Cut Ties with Frankie Montás
NEW YORK – The New York Mets announced on Tuesday the designation for assignment of Dominican pitcher Frankie Montás, ending their contractual relationship in the final year of a two-year, $34 million deal, signed last December.
This decision comes at a difficult time for the 32-year-old pitcher, who was expected to miss the entire 2026 season due to recent surgery on his throwing elbow. Montás was only able to make seven starts with the team, recording an ERA of 6.28, before being sidelined by physical problems that resulted in an ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury.
The Dominican was part of the Mets’ plan to rebuild their rotation last winter, along with the additions of Griffin Canning and Clay Holmes, the latter becoming a starter. However, Montás began 2025 on the injured list and didn’t debut until June 24, seeing his participation interrupted again in August after feeling pain in his biceps.
With his departure, the Mets are preparing for an aggressive market in search of high-level starters during free agency, where the team is expected to be among the top bidders for reinforcements for their rotation.
The move marks a new chapter in Montás’ career, whose talent and power on the mound have been affected in recent years by a history of injuries that have prevented him from maintaining continuity.
