LMD and CIFAL UN: Training for Disaster Prevention in Ports and Airports

Santo Domingo. The Dominican Municipal League (LMD) led the organization of the international seminar “Disaster Preparedness in Strategic Ports and Airports.” This initiative was promoted by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), through its CIFAL network of centers, with CIFAL Miami at the forefront and the collaboration of the Atlanta, Mérida and Dominican Republic centers.

The seminar focused on the crucial role of ports and airports in emergency situations. Their importance as key logistical points for humanitarian response and the continuity of essential operations was highlighted.

Opening of the Seminar

The opening of the event featured the participation of Víctor D´Aza, president of the LMD and CIFAL Dominican Republic; Mónika Infante, general director of AERODOM and president of ACI-LAC; Maricarmen Estrada, director of CIFAL Miami; Oscar Carrillo, president of the Mérida International Airport; Héctor Porcella, president of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC); Rafael Santos, director of CIFAL RD; and Edwin Olivares, operations director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE).

Prevention is the key factor for effective risk management in the face of emergencies and natural disasters.

Víctor D’Aza, as host, emphasized the importance of prevention. He valued the initiative that brought together key institutions for emergency response.

Airports and ports are vital for the supply of aid and evacuation. Poor management can generate logistical problems and put citizens and tourists at risk.

Mónika Infante highlighted the importance of efficient management in ports and airports.

The objective of this seminar is to strengthen capabilities, anticipate, and respond effectively to unexpected events, whether natural disasters or emergencies.

Maricarmen Estrada explained that the seminar sought to improve preparation and response capacity.

Héctor Porcella, president of the JAC, highlighted that the exchange of experiences will strengthen institutional capacities, foster international cooperation, and promote operational resilience in technical infrastructures.

This strategy is part of the Ports and Communities Disaster Preparedness and Resilience Program (C-PReP), developed by Outreach Aid to the Americas (OAA), with the support of AERODOM, VINCI Airports, ACI-LAC and FedEx, among other entities.
