LIDOM Cancels Game Between Águilas and Toros Due to Regulatory Infraction
Santo Domingo – The Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) has made a transcendental decision. The cancellation of the match played on Friday, January 16th between the Águilas Cibaeñas and the Toros del Este has been announced.
The game, held at the Francisco A. Micheli stadium in La Romana, was the subject of a protest filed by the Toros del Este, which was upheld by the league.
The Toros’ protest was based on the registration of nine imported players by the Águilas Cibaeñas. This contravenes the league’s regulations, which establish a limit of eight foreign players on the roster for each game.
The situation required the direct intervention of the president of LIDOM, Vitelio Mejía, who evaluated the arguments of both parties.
Although LIDOM validated the protest in terms of form, it rejected the confiscation of the game in favor of the Toros. Instead, the official cancellation of the match was determined due to the regulatory violation.
The game had ended with a 6-2 victory for the Águilas Cibaeñas. The Águilas’ roster included as imports Odrisamer Despaigne, Guadalupe Chávez, Matt Foster, Yoan López, A.J. Puckett, Elih Marrero, Sebastián Rivero, Rodolfo Amador and Juan Carlos Bengoa, although only six of them actively participated in the game.
The league informed that the game will be rescheduled only if necessary, depending on the result of the match between the Águilas Cibaeñas and the Leones del Escogido, scheduled for Sunday, January 18 at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal stadium.
In the event that the Águilas prevail over the Escogido, both teams —Águilas and Toros— would be tied with a record of 11-7, which would require the repetition of the canceled game in La Romana.
The Águilas Cibaeñas are obliged to win their remaining commitments to keep their aspirations of advancing to the final series of the championship alive.
