SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican baseball witnessed a historic moment this Sunday, although the result of the game did not accompany the celebration. Junior Lake, player for the Leones del Escogido, hit his 500th hit in regular series of the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM), an achievement that puts him in the history of the national sport. Despite Lake’s individual feat, the Leones del Escogido were defeated by the Águilas Cibaeñas with a score of 4-1 at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal stadium.

Junior Lake’s Milestones and Goals

With this unstoppable performance, Lake joins a select group of 21 players in the history of the league who have reached this figure. But the player’s ambition doesn’t stop there, as he pursues other significant milestones:
  • He needs 3 runs scored to reach 300, which would make him the thirteenth player to achieve it.
  • With one more home run, he would join the group of 16 players with 40.
  • With 6 additional stolen bases, he would reach 130 steals, positioning himself as the fifth in history with that amount.

In the accumulated total of all stages in LIDOM, Lake also continues to add relevant numbers:

  • He reached 300 RBIs, being the 14th player to achieve it.
  • He has 688 hits, seeking to join the 15 who have reached 700.
  • He is 2 doubles away from 100, 13 bases away from completing 1,000, and 11 walks away from 400, which would make him the third to achieve it.
  • His 164 steals put him six away from being the sixth in history with 170.

The Party

The game was decided in favor of the Águilas Cibaeñas, who took the lead in the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly by José Rodríguez and a single by Anthony Seigler that drove Ezequiel Durán to the plate, marked the first runs. In the fifth inning, Leody Taveras hit an unstoppable that allowed Julio E. Rodríguez to score. Later, in the seventh, Rodríguez was again the protagonist with a double that extended the Águilas’ lead. Abdiel Mendoza (4-1) took the victory after pitching five scoreless innings, while Grant Gavin (3-2) took the loss. Jeurys Familia secured the win with his fourth save.
