Kenyan John Korir made history this Monday by setting a new record in the Boston Marathon, during its 130th edition. Korir completed the race with an impressive time of 2 hours, 1 minute and 52 seconds, surpassing the previous mark by 70 seconds. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as the previous record had been in place for 15 years.

In the women’s category, Kenyan Sharon Lokedi also crowned champion for the second consecutive year in Boston, recording a time of 2 hours, 18 minutes and 51 seconds. For Korir, this victory represents his second consecutive triumph in Boston, one of the six most important marathons in the world, along with New York, London, Berlin, Tokyo, Chicago, and Sydney. In addition to his success in Boston, the Kenyan athlete won the Chicago Marathon in 2024. The men’s podium in Boston was completed with Tanzanian Alphonce Felix Simbu and Kenyan Benson Kipruto, who crossed the finish line practically together, with times of 2 hours, 2 minutes and 47 seconds and 2 hours, 2 minutes and 50 seconds, respectively. The men’s race was characterized by its high speed, as the times of Simbu and Kipruto also surpassed the previous Boston record, set in 2011 by Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai. In the women’s category, Lokedi repeated her victory, although her time was 89 seconds slower than the record she herself set last year. The women’s podium was dominated by Kenyan athletes, with Loice Chemnung in second place, 44 seconds behind Lokedi, and Mary Ngugi-Cooper in third position.
