In his statement, Filipe Luís emphasized that racism is an unacceptable behavior that must be combated and punished. He acknowledged that his previous words may have been misinterpreted due to the sensitivity of the issue. The former Atlético de Madrid and Deportivo de La Coruña player insisted that his position is firm and recalled that racism is a crime in Brazil, so it must be treated with the same rigor in any country. Furthermore, he expressed his full support for Vinícius Júnior, Real Madrid forward and trained in the lower categories of Flamengo. The controversy arose following an incident in the Champions League, where Vinícius Júnior reported a racist insult from the Argentinian player Gianluca Prestianni. In a press conference, Filipe Luís had commented that he was always treated well in Argentina and that an “isolated case” would not change his perception of the country. This comment generated criticism. In his clarification, Filipe Luís reiterated that he never wanted to minimize Vinícius’s suffering and reaffirmed his rejection of any form of discrimination in sports.
