Trial canceled for the death of Diego Maradona: Argentine court declares nullity

Buenos Aires, Argentina – An Argentine court has nullified the trial that sought to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death of Diego Armando Maradona, the legendary soccer player, which occurred in November 2020. Seven healthcare professionals faced charges of alleged medical negligence.

The judicial decision, which took many by surprise, came after the involvement of one of the judges involved in an unauthorized documentary about the case was revealed. This action was considered a serious breach of the court’s impartiality.

The trial, which generated great expectation both in Argentina and internationally, aimed to determine if there was criminal responsibility in the medical care provided to Maradona during his last days. The accused, including doctors, psychologists, and nurses, faced charges of homicide with eventual intent.

The annulment of the process implies that everything done up to that moment is null and void, and it must be evaluated whether to restart the trial from scratch or whether to take new measures within the Argentine judicial system.

The magistrate’s participation in the documentary, whose production did not have judicial authorization, was considered a violation of the principles of neutrality and independence of the judiciary. This led to the nullity ruled by the court.

The defendants’ defense celebrated the decision, considering it a step towards the restoration of due process. On the other hand, the lawyers of the Maradona family have announced that they will appeal the measure, arguing that it is a setback in the pursuit of justice.

The country remains divided between those who demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Maradona’s death, and those who believe the trial has been politicized.

Maradona, world champion with Argentina in 1986 and an emblematic figure of world football, died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, after suffering a cardiac decompensation.
