Borja Iglesias Responds to Homophobic Insults with Sarcasm

The RC Celta de Vigo striker, Borja Iglesias, reacted with irony to the homophobic insults received after the match against Sevilla FC at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium. The Spanish player responded through his social media to a video where offensive shouts from the local fans could be heard.

“How strange, this never happens in football,” wrote the footballer.

Iglesias’ response was a clear allusion to the insults that included expressions such as “let’s see if you die” and derogatory comments related to his orientation or personal expression.

This is not the first time Borja Iglesias has denounced this type of situation.

Last April, after Celta’s defeat against FC Barcelona, the forward had already publicly exposed the amount of offensive and discriminatory messages he receives on social media. On that occasion, Iglesias shared screenshots of comments with homophobic jokes and expressions of hate, lamenting that respect and tolerance continue to be pending subjects in football and society.

“We are still living in a society where respect is still far away,” he expressed.

Borja Iglesias has become one of the strongest voices in Spanish football in defense of diversity, respect, and inclusion, being a reference for many fans.
