Record Prices at the 2025 World Series: Tickets Exceed $2,000

Tickets for the first game of the 2025 World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers have reached unprecedented prices, exceeding $2,000 on the secondary market.

Tickets for the Rogers Centre, with a capacity of over 39,000 spectators, sold out quickly after their release on Tuesday morning through Ticketmaster, the official sales platform. Despite the initial price of the most economical tickets being around 250 Canadian dollars (approximately 180 US dollars), on the Ticketmaster platform itself, these same tickets were offered for resale for more than 2,000 Canadian dollars. The preferential seats, for their part, exceed 12,000 dollars.

Reactions and Criticisms Regarding Price Increases

The excessive increase in prices has generated discontent among fans and has provoked political reactions.

“When you have a single actor controlling the market, that’s not fair to the people,” Ford stated. “We are reviewing this situation.”

Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario
Ontario Premier Doug Ford called the situation a “rip-off” and announced that his government will investigate Ticketmaster’s monopoly on ticket sales for sporting events and shows. Ticketmaster, a subsidiary of LiveNation, also faces a lawsuit in the United States from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which accuses it of deceptive practices and manipulation of the resale market. In Canada, the company was the subject of a class action lawsuit in 2018 for concealing commissions, a case that concluded this year with a settlement of 6 million Canadian dollars in favor of consumers.

Positive Economic Impact in Toronto

Despite the controversy, a strong positive economic impact is expected in Toronto with the arrival of the World Series. City hotels report a 22% increase in room demand compared to the same period in 2024, and bars and restaurants are preparing for a historic weekend. The last time the Blue Jays participated in the World Series was in 1993, when the cheapest tickets cost 32 Canadian dollars, equivalent to about 62 current dollars adjusted for inflation.
