Madrid, Spain – Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed his withdrawal from the Mutua Madrid Open 2026 due to a right wrist injury, preventing him from competing in the best conditions. This decision comes after not recovering from the discomfort that forced him to withdraw from the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. This will be the second consecutive edition in which the Murcian will not be present at the Madrid tournament. Through his social media platforms, Alcaraz expressed his regret at not being able to participate in one of the most important events on his calendar.
The absence of Alcaraz joins that of the Serbian Novak Djokovic, who also announced his withdrawal due to physical problems, which represents a hard blow for the tournament. The alarms went off when Alcaraz required medical assistance during his debut in Barcelona. Although it was initially thought to be a minor issue, the tennis player admitted that the injury was “more serious than expected”. The Mutua Madrid Open will be held from April 20 to May 3 at the Caja Mágica, with the expected participation of the main figures of the circuit. Confirmation is awaited regarding the presence of Jannik Sinner, number one in the world, who could adjust his schedule for the upcoming tournaments, such as the Rome Masters and Roland Garros. The current defending champions are Casper Ruud and Aryna Sabalenka.Madrid is home and it hurts a lot not to be able to play here, especially for my people
