Xavi Hernández takes the reins of the Netherlands national team
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has officially announced this Wednesday the appointment of Xavi Hernández as the new head coach of the senior men’s national team. The 46-year-old Spanish strategist arrives in the position with the goal of leading a new process that will extend until the conclusion of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
This decision comes after the departure of Ronald Koeman, who left the “Clockwork Orange” bench following the team’s elimination in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, where the Netherlands fell to Morocco in a penalty shootout.
A long-awaited return to the bench
With this move, Xavi Hernández marks his return to technical management after a period of inactivity of more than two years. His last experience on the pitch was at the helm of Barcelona, an institution he managed from October 2021 to May 2024.
During his tenure with the Catalan team, the coach managed to consolidate a winning project by conquering both the League title and the Spanish Super Cup in 2023.
Interestingly, this is not the first time the paths of both coaches have crossed, as the Spaniard was precisely the one who replaced Koeman on the Barcelona bench during the year 2021.

Xavi’s official debut at the helm of the Dutch national team is scheduled for next September 24th. The strategist will have a high-level premiere, facing Germany in the framework of the Nations League.
