Unexpected turn: Woman retracts sexual abuse allegations against Jay-Z

In a judicial move that has captured the attention of the entertainment world, the woman who had previously accused rapper Jay-Z of sexually assaulting her when she was a minor has formally retracted her statements. The plaintiff, who identified herself under the pseudonym Jane Doe, admitted to a Manhattan federal court that she never had contact with the artist.

Through a legal document filed under penalty of perjury, the woman was blunt in clarifying the situation of the hip-hop icon, whose real name is Shawn Carter:

Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter never raped me. I never met or spoke with Mr. Carter. Mr. Carter never engaged in any inappropriate behavior toward me.

Plaintiff’s court statement

Case background

The controversy began in October 2024, when the woman filed a civil lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs for an alleged assault that occurred after the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Months later, the complaint was amended to include Jay-Z, who from the very beginning categorically denied any connection to the events.

Following a series of questions regarding the veracity of her own memories, the plaintiff requested to withdraw the legal action against both artists in February 2025. This change in position has generated the following consequences:

  • The formal retraction before judicial authorities.
  • The dismissal of the lawsuit with prejudice, preventing the case from being reopened for the same reasons.
  • The public apology offered by the woman to both the artist and his family for the damage caused.

Legal process in progress

Although Jay-Z has decided to remove the woman as a defendant in the legal process he initiated himself for defamation and damage to his image, the rapper maintains his legal battle against the team of lawyers who represented the woman at the time, pointing out that the accusations were malicious from their origin.

The plaintiff has emphasized that her decision to recant was not motivated by financial compensation, ensuring that she did not receive nor was she promised any payment to change her testimony. Despite maintaining that she was a victim of an assault in her past, she fully acknowledged that her identification of Jay-Z as one of those responsible was a mistake.
