Wilyer Abreu shines in the MLB and is named Player of the Week
Venezuelan outfielder Wilyer Abreu continues to demonstrate his status in the Major Leagues. The Boston Red Sox star was awarded American League Player of the Week this Monday, after displaying a powerful offense during the period between August 3 and August 9.
Abreu was a fundamental piece in Boston maintaining its positive streak, recording an impressive 1.584 OPS. During this dream week, the Venezuelan hit three home runs and drove in nine runs, leading the latter department in the American League. His discipline at the plate was also notable, as he drew five walks and struck out just twice in 23 plate appearances.
The outfielder managed seven hits in five games, helping the Red Sox achieve a positive 4-1 record in their recent matchups.
A milestone in the 2026 season
With this new recognition, Abreu adds his second Player of the Week award this season. This achievement places him in a select group, becoming the fourth American League player to repeat the award this year, sharing honors with figures of the stature of Yordan Álvarez, Ben Rice, and Byron Buxton.

On the other hand, defensive spectacularity also had its place. Venezuelan rookie Luis Lara, of the Milwaukee Brewers, was recognized with the Play of the Week. Lara impressed the fans with an acrobatic catch against the wall during the tenth inning of Sunday’s duel against the Minnesota Twins, saving a critical moment for his team.
