Vladimir Putin casts his electronic vote in the Russian legislative elections
Russian President Vladimir Putin fulfilled his civic duty this Friday by participating in the legislative elections through electronic voting. The leader carried out the process from his office, following the same digital approach he has maintained in previous electoral events, including the 2021 parliamentary elections and this year’s presidential polls.
Through official Kremlin platforms, visual material was shared showing Putin casting his vote in front of a computer. This remote voting practice is not new for the Russian leader, who has opted for this method on several occasions since 2021, covering both municipal and federal elections.
Context and citizen participation
In the run-up to the electoral process, the Russian president made an appeal to the nation to head to the polls, directly linking the exercise of voting with support for the ongoing military operations. Of the eleven political parties competing in this contest, ten have expressed their support for the current war campaign in Ukraine.
According to reports from electoral authorities, the day has shown a remarkable participatory dynamic:
- Nearly 10% of the national electorate had already cast their vote in the initial stages.
- In the electronic voting modality, the participation of citizens registered under this format exceeded 50% during the first few hours.
- The process takes place over three days in 89 regions, with more than 111 million citizens called to elect the 450 deputies of the Duma.
Debate on the voting system
The use of electronic voting continues to be a subject of political debate in Russia. While the United Russia party seeks to consolidate its constitutional majority, opposition sectors and groups such as the Communist Party have expressed their reservations regarding the transparency and the possibility of manipulation in the digital results.
The political configuration of these elections has also been marked by judicial exclusions, such as that of the Yabloko party, which opposes the war in Ukraine. Despite the restrictions, some candidates linked to said group maintain their participation in various electoral districts, while the Russian diaspora is also actively participating through more than 300 polling stations enabled in 152 countries.
