Justice in motion: Suspects in the assassination of Jovenel Moïse transferred to Florida

In a decisive move for the case that shocked the region, a group of eighteen people linked to the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was transferred this Sunday from Haiti to the United States. Those involved will appear before the court in the Southern District of Florida to answer for the charges against them.

The information was confirmed by federal prosecutor Jason A. Reding Quiñones, who highlighted that, with this operation, the number of defendants for their direct or indirect participation in the assassination rises to thirty people. The transfer was carried out using a military plane that landed in Port-au-Prince to complete the logistics of this important judicial phase.

Key figures in U.S. custody

Among those extradited, Joseph Felix Badio stands out, identified by authorities as one of the main masterminds and planners of the assassination. Along with him, several Colombian citizens were transferred who were allegedly part of the group of mercenaries that broke into the president’s private residence in Pétion-ville.

Although there was initial uncertainty regarding Badio’s extradition due to his relevance in local investigations in Haiti, his presence on the passenger list was confirmed, marking a milestone in the legal process taking place on U.S. soil.

Today’s transfer marks the beginning of an important new phase in our pursuit of justice for the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Our work did not end with the men who planned and executed this assassination. We will follow the evidence wherever it leads, to those who financed it, facilitated it, supported it, or committed crimes to make it possible.

A judicial process that is intensifying

The case has recently been placed under a gag order, suggesting the possible addition of new charges or the involvement of more individuals in the murder plot. This operation comes at a crucial moment, just days before the trial begins for Christian Emmanuel Sanon, another key suspect who aspired to succeed Moïse in the presidency.

Alofoke Deportes will continue to follow up on this legal process, which seeks to clarify all the facts that occurred on that fateful day, when President Moïse was the victim of torture and an armed attack in his own residence, an event that left an indelible mark on the political history of Haiti.
