Tragedy in Cotuí: Young person dies and two are injured after shooting in Altagracia sector

A violent armed incident shook the municipality of Cotuí, in the Sánchez Ramírez province, last Friday night, leaving one person dead and two seriously injured. The event occurred specifically on Hermanas Mirabal Street, in the vicinity of the Basora Gym, located in the Altagracia sector.

The fatal victim was identified as 21-year-old Starlyn Sanchy Meza. According to the authorities’ report, the young man lost his life due to severe traumatic brain injury caused by a firearm projectile. The medical diagnosis detailed that the bullet entered through the right temporal region and exited through the left, causing irreversible damage.

Status of the injured

In addition to the deceased, the shooting left two other people injured, who are currently receiving medical attention at a local hospital:

  • Darlin Veloz Castro, 21 years old, who presents a penetrating gunshot wound in the lateral region of the left calf.
  • A 17-year-old adolescent, whose identity is kept confidential for legal reasons, who suffered a projectile wound in the dorsal region of the left foot, resulting in a fracture of the fifth metatarsal.

The authorities have initiated a rigorous investigative process to clarify the motives behind this attack and locate those responsible, who allegedly fled the scene on a motorcycle.

Ongoing research

Following the report of the shots, units of the National Police, agents of the Central Directorate of Investigation (DICRIM), and members of the Scientific Police arrived at the scene along with representatives of the Public Ministry. Forensic teams proceeded with the lifting of evidence and the collection of proof to allow for progress in clarifying the case.
