Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder arrested at protest against Netanyahu in New York
Renowned Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon and Hacks star Hannah Einbinder were arrested this Thursday in New York City. The arrest took place during a massive demonstration in front of the United Nations headquarters, organized as a protest against the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in the city to participate in the General Assembly.
The intervention of the New York Police Department was necessary to clear an intersection on First Avenue that had been blocked by protesters. According to official reports, the deployment occurred after an unauthorized gathering where participants ignored authorities’ warnings to clear vehicular traffic.
Public figures and activists in custody
The operation resulted in the arrest of more than a hundred people. Among the prominent figures who were taken into custody, in addition to Sarandon and Einbinder, are:
- Darializa Avila Chevalier, Democratic congressional candidate.
- Chi Ossé, New York City Council member.
- Caleb Hearon, comedian.
- Glennon Doyle, author.
- Chelsea Manning, former intelligence analyst.
Images recorded during the operation showed the actresses being escorted to police buses with their hands bound by plastic zip ties, while the group continued with slogans against the Israeli leader.

Protesters’ demands
The mobilization, organized by the group Jewish Voice for Peace, brought together about 200 people wearing t-shirts and carrying signs with clear messages: “Fund people, not bombs” and “End the genocide.” The activists’ central demand is an immediate halt to the supply of weapons to Israel and a firmer stance regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Other personalities such as actress Cynthia Nixon, playwright Tony Kushner, and photographer Nan Goldin were also present at the scene in support of the cause, although they were not part of the group that was detained. After the initial incident in front of the diplomatic headquarters, hundreds of people continued marching through the streets of New York, maintaining their slogans in solidarity with Gaza.
