Maritime tragedy in Indonesia: At least six dead and dozens missing after ferry sinking
A tragedy shook the waters of the Java Sea during the early hours of this Sunday, when a passenger ferry suffered a serious incident that has left, so far, a toll of at least six people dead and about 130 missing. The vessel, identified as Virgo Transport 8, was covering the commercial route between Surabaya, on the island of Java, and Banjarmasin, south of Borneo.
According to reports from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the ferry stopped emitting its positioning signal around 2:00 a.m. According to the available information, the vessel was carrying a total of 243 people, distributed among 213 passengers and 30 crew members. So far, rescue efforts have managed to save 107 survivors.
Search operations under adverse conditions
The rescue operation remains active with the deployment of more than a dozen vessels, counting on the vital support of the Navy and various volunteer groups. Authorities indicated that the ferry was facing hostile weather at the time of the emergency, with waves reaching between 2 and 2.5 meters in height, which complicated the vessel’s stability before it sank.
Emergency teams continue to work intensely in the area, tracking the last recorded coordinates, located about 80 nautical miles southwest of Basirih Banjarmasin, in a race against time to locate the missing.

Authorities are keeping investigations open to determine the exact causes that led the Virgo Transport 8 to lose its stability in the middle of the sea.
