Raquel Peña officially opens the 2026-2027 school year from Santiago
The Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, led the formal start of the 2026-2027 school year this Monday from the facilities of the Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes Polytechnic, in the province of Santiago. During the event, the official oversaw the delivery of 24 fully renovated areas, designed to enhance the quality of academic and technical education in the country.
The event was attended by local authorities, representatives of the education sector, and the student community, who witnessed the modernization of laboratories, technical classrooms, and multipurpose halls, which are fundamental spaces for the comprehensive development of the students.

Focus on technology and teacher training
The vice president highlighted that more than two million students are returning to classrooms nationwide, reaffirming the State’s commitment to preparing future generations for the challenges of the global market. To ensure the success of this period, several key strategies have been implemented:
- Continuous training: More than 90,000 teachers and administrative staff were trained before the start of classes to strengthen pedagogical processes.
- Infrastructure: 1,500 new classrooms were incorporated and maintenance work was carried out in 1,342 educational facilities nationwide.
- Technological scholarships: The delivery of more than 36,000 scholarships through ITLA was announced, covering high-demand areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software development, and digital marketing.
With this series of interventions, the government seeks to bridge the gap between traditional education and contemporary technological demands, providing young people with practical tools that facilitate their entry into the labor market.
National commitment to education
The official opening in Santiago featured the participation of key figures such as Governor Rosa Santos, Mayor Ulises Rodríguez, Senator Daniel Rivera, and the director of Coraasan, Andrés Cueto, along with regional representatives from the Ministry of Education. All those present agreed on the need to maintain coordinated work between families and authorities to ensure an environment conducive to learning.
The start of the 2026-2027 school year represents, for the Dominican educational system, a decisive step toward improving school infrastructure and strengthening digital competencies, pillars that will mark the academic development of students during this new cycle.
