Rafael Devers shines in the National League and is named Player of the Week
The stellar Dominican third baseman Rafael Devers has been distinguished as the Player of the Week in the National League, thanks to a high-level offensive display wearing the San Francisco Giants jersey. During the seven games evaluated, the slugger demonstrated tremendous power by hitting six home runs and driving in 13 runs.
Devers recorded a .385 batting average, after accumulating 10 hits in 26 at-bats, including two doubles in his personal tally. His consistency was remarkable, managing to clear the fences in five of the seven games played, which consolidates his excellent momentum since the All-Star break ended.
Since the resumption of the season, the Dominican player has maintained a .993 OPS, accumulating a total of 16 home runs and 40 RBIs in his last 49 appearances.
This award marks the fifth time in the three-time All-Star’s career that he has received the Player of the Week recognition, this being his second award in the senior circuit after having earned his first last September.
Carter Jensen stands out in the American League
For his part, in the American League, the award went to the Kansas City Royals rookie catcher, Carter Jensen. The young talent finished the week with a .421 average, the result of eight hits in 19 at-bats, standing out with three doubles, a triple, and three home runs.
- Jensen adds 22 home runs in his debut campaign.
- He is the first Kansas City player to be recognized since Bobby Witt Jr. in May.
- He joins Vinnie Pasquantino as the only Royals rookies to win the award since 2022.
Colton Cowser and a catch for the history books
The day also left memorable moments on the defensive side. Colton Cowser, center fielder for the Baltimore Orioles, starred in the play of the week by robbing Jake McCarthy of a home run on August 31st. The intervention, which occurred in the bottom of the ninth inning, preserved the Orioles’ 2-1 victory against the Rockies.
The spectacular intervention was described by Orioles manager Craig Albernaz as the best play I have ever seen.
With these performances, Devers, Jensen, and Cowser position themselves as the most prominent figures in this intense final stretch of the Major League season, where every play proves decisive for the aspirations of their respective teams.
