Comprehensive modernization of the Puerto Plata Cable Car: A technological leap for Dominican tourism
Puerto Plata is preparing for a historic transformation. The Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, broke ground to mark the start of the comprehensive modernization works for the iconic Puerto Plata Cable Car, an infrastructure that has been a pillar of tourism in the area since 1975.
This ambitious project is led by the Unit for the Readjustment of Neighborhoods and Surroundings (URBE) in partnership with the DOMA Consortium, comprised of the prestigious Austrian firm Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH and the Dominican construction company Grupo Malespín. The intervention seeks to equip the system with cutting-edge technology, ensuring greater safety and efficiency for visitors.
State-of-the-art technology and greater capacity
The project contemplates the replacement of the current system with a modern aerial tramway (ATW). Among the most notable improvements are:
- Panoramic cabins: Two new units will be installed with a capacity for 55 passengers each, tripling the current capacity.
- Operational efficiency: The system will allow for the transport of up to 430 passengers per hour in each direction.
- Safety and control: Complete renovation of the drive systems, monitoring, electrical infrastructure, and safety mechanisms.
The modernization of the Puerto Plata cable car combines the historical value it holds for this province with a more modern, safe, and accessible infrastructure with greater capacity to welcome Dominicans and visitors.
José Ignacio Paliza, Minister of the Presidency
For his part, Igor Rodríguez, Director General of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), underscored the importance of this project to raise the reliability standards of cable transport in the country, ensuring that the new system will meet the most rigorous technical requirements at an international level.
Commitment to excellence
The company in charge, Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH, is recognized worldwide as a leader in the manufacturing of cable transport systems, contributing its vast experience in the design and maintenance of complex infrastructure. The intervention not only seeks to modernize the equipment but also to ensure that the iconic route to Loma Isabel de Torres has optimal conditions for accessibility and service.
It is estimated that the commissioning of the renovated cable car will be a reality by the first quarter of 2028, once the assembly stages and the exhaustive technical tests necessary for its commercial operation have been completed.
