Project promoted to integrate seismic education into the Dominican school curriculum
The deputy for the Santo Domingo province, Domingo de León, has presented a legislative initiative to the Chamber of Deputies that seeks to strengthen the population’s response and prevention capacity in the face of possible seismic events. The proposal consists of the formal incorporation of seismic education as a mandatory subject within the national educational curriculum.
Through a resolution project, the legislator requests that President Luis Abinader instruct the Ministry of Education to proceed with the adaptation of the school curriculum. According to De León, this measure is vital to reduce the vulnerability of the citizenry and ensure that students know how to act correctly in the face of an emergency of this nature.
School prevention and safety
The urgency of this measure gains greater weight following the recent execution of the National Earthquake Evacuation Drill, an exercise that has brought to the table the need to improve the preparedness of institutions and society in general. The deputy emphasized that, given that the Dominican territory is located on active geological faults, prevention must be a State priority, recalling the historical precedent of the 1946 earthquake.
In addition to academic training, De León expressed his concern regarding the current state of educational infrastructure:
The legislator warned that, after conducting structural assessments, it was determined that at least 34 educational centers must be demolished as they do not meet the necessary conditions to guarantee the safety of students in the event of a seismic movement.
