Government intervenes to avoid fuel payment crisis following conflict with Anadegas
The National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor) reported that various government institutions are actively working to find a definitive solution to the conflict between the National Association of Gasoline Retailers (Anadegas) and the providers of electronic payment devices, commonly known as verifones.
The executive director of Pro Consumidor, Eddy Alcántara, detailed that the dialogue tables are being led by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM), with the active participation of his institution and other State agencies. The primary objective of these meetings is to reach a consensus that avoids any type of interruption in electronic payment services at the country’s service stations.
A call for prudence
Faced with the tension generated by the retailers’ stance, Alcántara called on the leadership of Anadegas to act with common sense and allow the negotiation process to take its course. The official emphasized that the priority is to protect the end user, who should not be harmed by commercial differences between station owners and technology provider companies.

The controversy gained public relevance following Anadegas’ announcement regarding its intention to remove card terminals from more than 700 gas stations nationwide starting next September 25th. This measure, if implemented, would significantly impact the credit and debit card payment options that drivers use daily.
