Mourning in the Norwegian royal family: Princess Astrid passes away at 94
The Royal House of Norway is going through a moment of deep sorrow after the passing of Princess Astrid at 94 years of age was confirmed. The news comes just 48 hours after the sister of the late King Harald V attended the farewell ceremonies for her brother in Oslo.
Monarch Haakon VIII expressed his sadness at the loss of his aunt, highlighting the legacy of service and dedication that defined the princess throughout her life. Astrid, who faced considerable health problems over the last year, had remained hospitalized for more than six months due to complications from pneumonia, managing to be discharged last August.
A life dedicated to the monarchy and social work
Despite her physical fragility, Princess Astrid made a final effort to bid farewell to King Harald V. Although she could not be part of the funeral procession from the Royal Palace to the cathedral, she was present at the religious ceremony and the private act held at Akershus Fortress, where the sovereign’s remains rest.
Princess Astrid was a loyal, committed figure, deeply close to those most in need of attention, standing out especially for her work in favor of the inclusion of vulnerable people.
Royal House of Norway
Princess Astrid’s trajectory was fundamental to the Norwegian crown. From the age of 22, she assumed the role of the country’s first lady following the passing of her mother, Crown Princess Märtha, establishing herself as a fundamental pillar in the official representation of the royal family for decades.
Transition in the Crown
This passing marks a period of significant change for the Norwegian monarchy, occurring exactly 14 days after King Haakon VIII ascended the throne. The new sovereign has underscored the importance of his aunt’s example, whose dedication to public service and sensitivity toward the most disadvantaged sectors leave an indelible mark on the history of Norway.
