Justice in Samaná: Three months of preventive detention for the death of Eduardo Kelly

The Instruction Court of the Samaná Judicial District has issued a coercive measure consisting of three months of preventive detention against Gleivy Rymer. The defendant is accused of his alleged responsibility in the death of Eduardo Kelly de Peña, popularly known as “Chicho,” who lost his life after a brutal attack that caused him severe burns while he was resting.

The judicial resolution establishes that the defendant must serve the deprivation of liberty measure at the Santa Bárbara fortress, while the Public Prosecutor’s Office continues with the relevant investigations into the tragic event.

An attack that shocked the community

The unfortunate episode occurred during the early hours of last July 14th at a commercial establishment located in front of the Samaná boardwalk. According to the security camera records that documented the incident, the victim was surprised while sleeping, at which point an individual threw a bucket of boiling water at him. The injuries caused by this assault were decisive in his subsequent death.

This case has generated a strong impact on Samaná society, motivating various demonstrations by family members and acquaintances in front of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, who have demanded speed and justice given the gravity of the events.

The ongoing judicial process

Prosecutor Reynaldo Quevedo indicated that this three-month period granted by the court is essential for the Public Prosecutor’s Office to consolidate the evidence and present the conclusive act of the process. For his part, Pedro Kelly de Peña, father of the deceased, expressed his gratitude for the legal assistance received and reaffirmed the family’s position to remain firm until a final sentence is achieved.

For the moment, Gleivy Rymer remains in custody as an alleged suspect, pending a determination by the courts regarding his degree of responsibility as the judicial process unfolds.
