The meaning of Sunday for the Catholic faith
The leader of the Catholic Church underscored the spiritual relevance of this day, drawing on the teachings of Saint John Paul II through the apostolic letter Dies Domini. According to the pontiff, Sunday is defined by four fundamental pillars:
- The Lord’s day.
- The Church’s day.
- Man’s day.
- The day of days.
The Pope emphasized that the sanctification of Sunday necessarily requires the celebration of the Eucharist, clarifying that this liturgical act cannot be replaced by digital means or virtual broadcasts.
Finally, Francis highlighted that the Eucharist should not be understood as a passive act, but as an assembly that is strengthened through the active and communal participation of the brothers, reaffirming that physical presence is an essential element for the life of faith in the Christian community.
