Peru declares LPG supply emergency due to climate crisis in the south
The Peruvian government has officialized the declaration of emergency for the supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in five strategic regions in the south of the country. The measure, which will be in effect for 30 days, responds to the severe damage caused by intense rains and landslides that have left roads blocked, hindering the transport of this essential resource.
The ministerial resolution, issued on an extraordinary basis, specifically covers the regions of Cusco, Puno, Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna. Given this situation, the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining (OSINERGMIN) has received instructions to implement transitional measures to ensure the flow of LPG, allowing for flexibilities in safety and commercialization regulations to prevent shortages.
Government actions and oversight
The Peruvian president traveled to Arequipa to oversee evacuation efforts and assess damage to road infrastructure. During her tour, the president acknowledged the magnitude of the problem, noting that the presence of large rocks on the roads will complicate repair times. Likewise, she highlighted that the enabling of alternative routes, such as the old Pan-American highway, has become a priority in light of the effects projected by the El Niño phenomenon.
During the tour, we were able to see large rocks, which will delay the clearing of the road. With the arrival of the El Niño phenomenon, clearing the old Pan-American highway will be a priority to have two access routes to the south of the country.
Additional measures for the transport sector
This declaration is in addition to a series of actions promoted by the Executive branch to mitigate the economic impact on the energy and transport sectors. Recently, 31 million dollars were allocated for subsidies for cargo and passenger transporters, seeking to counteract the increase in fuel prices.
- The subsidy, which ranges between 15% and 20%, benefits various sectors, including land and river transport and motorcycle taxi drivers.
- The measure has a temporary duration of three months.
- The main objective is to maintain stability in ticket prices and ensure the continuity of the national logistics chain.
With these provisions, the authorities seek to alleviate the pressure on citizens’ cost of living and ensure that essential public services are not interrupted by the adverse weather conditions affecting a large part of the Peruvian territory.
