Brussels intensifies scrutiny of ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox under the Digital Services Act
The European Commission has taken a firm step in technological regulation by designating ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox as large-scale digital platforms. This measure, framed within the Digital Services Act (DSA), imposes rigorous requirements on these companies regarding transparency, security, and comprehensive user protection within the community territory.
The decision is due to the fact that these platforms have exceeded the critical threshold of 45 million monthly active users in the European Union. Under this classification, ChatGPT has been categorized as a very large search engine, while Reddit and Roblox have been identified as very large online platforms, which triggers a reinforced supervision protocol by European authorities.
Deadlines and obligations for platforms
Following the official notification, companies have a four-month adaptation period, with a deadline by the end of November. During this time, they must implement measures to comply with DSA standards, highlighting the following priorities:
- Assessment and mitigation of systemic risks derived from their algorithmic systems.
- Strict control over the dissemination of content considered illegal.
- Enhanced protection for minors.
- Safeguarding of mental and physical well-being, as well as the fundamental rights of users.
- Protection of electoral processes and public security.
The regulation seeks to increase the accountability of large digital platforms and reduce the potential negative effects derived from their services on millions of users.
Shared supervision and European scope
To ensure compliance with these regulations, the European Commission will exercise direct investigative powers. Oversight will be carried out through a cooperation structure with national authorities. In the case of ChatGPT and Reddit, supervision will be coordinated with the Irish authority, while for Roblox, work will be done closely with the Dutch regulatory body.
With these new additions, the European Union now has 28 platforms and search engines under this control regime. This move underscores Brussels’ commitment to maintaining a more transparent and secure digital ecosystem, forcing tech giants to adjust their internal processes to align with the region’s values and legal standards.
