Oneil Cruz returns with power and leads Pirates to victory
Star Dominican player Oneil Cruz made a spectacular return to the Major Leagues, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. After overcoming an injury that kept him sidelined for 58 games, the Dominican showed that his offensive ability remains intact from his very first at-bat.
Cruz, who was activated after completing his time on the 60-day injured list due to fractures in his left hand, wasted no time making an impact on the game. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Dominican hit a two-run home run off pitcher Keider Montero, breaking up the no-hitter the Venezuelan starter had maintained until that moment.
A massive hit
Cruz’s home run, which traveled a projected distance of 422 feet, left the bat at a speed of 107.7 miles per hour. This hit not only gave the Pirates the lead, but also sparked a three-run rally that proved decisive for the final score.
We are excited to see you back in the lineup. It means a lot to us.

Dominance on the mound and speed on the diamond
Cruz’s offensive effort was supported by a masterful performance from starter Braxton Ashcraft, who pitched eight innings allowing just one run. The game also stood out for its pace, being completed in just two hours and two minutes, making it the fastest nine-inning game for Pittsburgh this season.
- Triumphant return: Cruz finished the day 1-for-3, with a home run and two RBIs.
- Health strategy: The Pittsburgh organization plans to alternate the Dominican player between center field and the designated hitter position to monitor his recovery.
- Previous statistics: Before his injury, Cruz had accumulated 14 home runs and 44 RBIs, establishing himself as a key piece in the Pirates’ structure.
With this return, the Pittsburgh team seeks to strengthen its offense in the final stretch of the season, relying on the power and versatility that the Dominican outfielder offers in each of his plate appearances.
