MLB proposes a structural revolution: 154 games and key changes to the postseason for 2029
Major League Baseball (MLB) has put an ambitious proposal on the table directed at the Players Association, with the goal of radically transforming the professional baseball landscape. This project, designed to take effect in 2029, seeks to optimize both the intensity of the regular season and the spectacle of the playoffs.
Among the most significant changes, the reduction of the schedule from 162 to 154 games and a deep restructuring of the postseason format stand out, seeking to benefit the teams with the best performance during the year and improve athlete rest.
Keys to the proposed transformation
- Schedule adjustment: The regular season would be reduced to 154 games. To ensure rest, it is proposed that Mondays be regular off-days, with Thursdays as an alternative for teams that must play at the beginning of the week.
- Salary protection: A fundamental point for the players’ union is that this eight-game reduction will not affect compensation. Salaries and bonuses will be maintained, with the necessary thresholds for contractual provisions adjusted proportionally.
- Right to choose opponent: MLB seeks to reward excellence. In the Wild Card Round, the third seed will be able to select their opponent from the fifth and sixth seeds. Subsequently, the top seed in each league will have the power to choose their opponent for the Division Series, increasing competitiveness each day.
- Extended Division Series: The postseason would gain drama by moving from the current five-game format to best-of-seven series.
- Pitching optimization: The new design includes strategic rest days before games 5, 6, and 7 in the Championship Series, ensuring that the best starting pitchers arrive in optimal condition for the decisive duels.
- Media impact: With the arrival of new audiovisual rights agreements in 2029, this format seeks to boost national broadcasts and foster new rivalries that attract a larger audience.
The ability to choose an opponent would directly reward teams with better records and increase the importance of every victory during the 154 games of the regular season.
With this proposal, baseball’s governing body seeks to modernize the competition, prioritizing the spectacle and the physical well-being of the players without compromising the economic integrity of existing contracts. MLB is betting on a 2029 where every decision on the field carries greater weight on the road to the World Series.
