Historic night in LIDOM: Licey signs a no-hitter and Ozuna shines with the Gigantes
The 2026-2027 championship season of the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM), dedicated to the memory of businessman Héctor José Rizek Llabaly for the Banreservas Cup, was marked by intense emotions, highlighting a historic milestone for the Tigres del Licey and a spectacular comeback by the Gigantes del Cibao.
Tigres del Licey’s mound feat
The Tigres del Licey wrote a golden page in their history by completing a no-hitter against the Toros del Este. At the Francisco A. Micheli stadium in La Romana, a pitching staff composed of seven pitchers—Luis Gil, R. Clemente, A. Cornielle, M. Arias, L. Frías, W. Suero, and Jean Carlos Mejía—combined to completely silence the bull’s offense, sealing a 3-0 victory.
This achievement represents the fifth no-hitter in the history of the blue franchise and the 12th in the league’s history. It is worth noting that this is the second such game that the Tigres have achieved against the Toros in the same venue, recalling the precedent of November 1, 2022.
The dominance of the blue pitchers was absolute, keeping the Toros del Este hitless throughout the entire game, a feat that had not been recorded in the winter circuit since November 2023.
Marcell Ozuna leads the Giants’ comeback
In San Francisco de Macorís, the Gigantes del Cibao staged a vibrant 14-9 victory over the Leones del Escogido. The peak moment came in the eighth inning, when Marcell Ozuna hit a grand slam against Iván Armstrong, sealing the home comeback.
Ozuna finished the day with an outstanding 5-for-2 performance, including six RBIs. For his part, Nomar Mazara contributed to the attack with two hits and two RBIs. Despite the efforts of José Marmolejos and Sócrates Brito for the Leones, the team from San Francisco de Macorís managed to secure their first win in the head-to-head series against the scarlet squad.
Rain postpones the match in Santiago
The scheduled game between the Estrellas Orientales and the Águilas Cibaeñas at Cibao Stadium was suspended due to weather conditions. The duel was tied 0-0 in the top of the second inning when rainfall forced the action to stop. LIDOM will soon announce the date on which this match will be rescheduled.
Standings overview
Following the day’s results, the Tigres del Licey consolidate their position at the top of the standings, followed by the Toros del Este. Meanwhile, the rest of the teams continue to adjust their rosters in a season that promises to be highly competitive, with the Estrellas Orientales and Gigantes del Cibao fighting to climb the rankings, while the Águilas and Leones look to make up ground in the table.
