Quibdó receives humanitarian aid after the devastating earthquake in Colombia

The city of Quibdó, in the department of Chocó, began receiving the first shipments of humanitarian aid this Thursday following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia last Monday. The situation in the area remains critical, with thousands of people still unable to return to their homes, which has triggered a national mobilization in a race against time.

Tatiana Céspedes, wife of Colombian Vice President José Manuel Restrepo, highlighted the solidarity of the citizenry, which has allowed collection centers in various cities across the country to remain operational. According to reports, nearly 18 tons of supplies have already been accounted for, including food, hygiene kits, and mattresses, managed under the campaign led by First Lady Ana Lucía Pineda, with Medellín serving as the main logistics hub.

Urgent needs in the affected area

Despite the efforts, the situation remains complex. The immediate opening of five new shelters is required: one in Quibdó and four additional ones in other municipalities of Chocó, one of the regions with the highest poverty rates in the country. To equip these shelters, authorities are calling for more kitchen utensils, sheets, mosquito nets, and basic hygiene items.

Jhon Arias’ gesture of solidarity

In the midst of this emergency, Palmeiras footballer and Colombian national team star, Jhon Arias, has played a fundamental role. The athlete, a native of Quibdó, has coordinated the shipment of three planes loaded with essential supplies for his hometown.

  • The first flight transported medical personnel and health equipment.
  • Subsequent flights transported food and essential products.
  • In total, nearly 2.5 tons of aid collected together with his wife, Alejandra Ayala, have been managed.

A fourth plane is expected to land in the coming hours, along with an additional truck arriving with more donations, all under the player’s direct funding. This initiative responds to the commitment Arias made public just hours after the earthquake, when he announced that he would put all his available resources toward helping the victims in his homeland.
